Rotary = Swiss Army Knife?

Rotary reminds me of a Swiss Army knife because it is many tools in one.  While the tools individually may not be ‘best in class’, when combined they form a remarkably handy implement, that you can take with you anywhere.  Let me explain…

First, Rotary reminds me of church.  While Rotary is not a religious organization, at each meeting, we provide time to connect with others in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Rotary embraces the idea of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

Next, Rotary reminds me of the BBB.  Rotary advances the ideal of conducting one’s business and personal life in an ethical manner.  We strive to live by the Four-Way Test:

Of all the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Then, Rotary reminds me of the Chamber of Commerce.  Rotarians are encouraged to support each other’s businesses, and opportunities are provided for business networking.

Rotary reminds me of community foundations.  Rotary clubs focus most of their service efforts to make a difference right in their communities, with projects that address pressing local needs.

Rotary also reminds me of international charities that work to address large, systemic problems.  The Rotary Foundation’s flagship initiative, launched in 1985, is the global eradication of Polio.  And we are nearly there, with a 99.9% reduction in polio cases worldwide.  Rotary’s causes include:  Promoting Peace, Providing Clean Water, Saving Mothers & Children, Supporting Education, Growing Local Economies, and Fighting Disease.  The Rotary Foundation has spent over 3 billion dollars on life-changing, sustainable projects to address these issues.

Lastly, just like a Swiss Army knife, you can take Rotary with you everywhere.  Rotary has more than 1.2 million members, in over 200 countries.  Rotary is an international fellowship of like-minded individuals, committed to doing good in the world.

Join Rotary and take advantage of a remarkable tool that combines the best of several organizations into one powerful and effective package!  Or, if you already are a Rotarian, pull out that little tool that you’ve never tried before and give it a spin!
